Seth Kibler, a beloved alumnus of Canisius High School and former Xavier University swimmer, has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. He died on July 15, 2026, at the age of 23, leaving behind family, friends, teammates, coaches, and an entire community that admired his talent, determination, and character.
The announcement of Seth’s passing was shared by Canisius High School, where he was remembered as both an exceptional student-athlete and a cherished member of the Crusader family. His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from classmates, alumni, faculty, and members of the swimming community who continue to celebrate the impact he made during his life.
“Seth was a member of our championship swim program and a deeply valued member of the Canisius High School community,” said Canisius High School President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., in a statement honoring the late alumnus.
“We are tremendously saddened to learn of his passing. We hold Seth, his twin brother Clayton, and all who knew and loved him in our prayer during this difficult time. May Seth rest in the peace and joy of God’s presence.”
A native of Buffalo, New York, Seth established himself as one of the standout athletes in the Canisius High School swimming program. Alongside his twin brother, Clayton Kibler, he helped contribute to the school’s championship success and earned numerous individual honors throughout his high school career.
Seth competed in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association All-Catholic Swimming Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. His performances consistently placed him among the region’s top swimmers, demonstrating remarkable dedication and athletic excellence.
In 2017, Seth and Clayton were recognized together as CHS Swimming’s Co-Rookies of the Year, marking the beginning of an outstanding high school swimming career. By his senior year, Seth had further distinguished himself, earning the title of Most Valuable Swimmer in 2019.
One of the defining moments of his athletic career came during the 2019 All-Catholic Championships, where he captured three gold medals. Seth claimed victories in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly while also swimming the opening backstroke leg of the championship-winning 200-yard medley relay. His performances reflected not only his talent but also his commitment to teamwork and excellence.
Following graduation from Canisius High School in 2020, Seth continued his swimming career at Xavier University, where he competed collegiately while pursuing his education. He graduated from Xavier University just last year, achieving another important milestone despite the health challenges he would later face.
Those who knew Seth remember him not only for his athletic accomplishments but also for his perseverance, humility, and positive spirit. His determination in and out of the pool inspired teammates and coaches alike, while his kindness left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Canisius High School extended its heartfelt sympathies to Seth’s twin brother Clayton, their family, and friends as they grieve this tremendous loss. The family has announced that a private service will be held to honor Seth’s life.
Though his life was tragically cut short, Seth Kibler’s legacy as a gifted swimmer, dedicated student, loyal teammate, and beloved son, brother, and friend will continue to be remembered by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
